RECORDING MARKS FOR TESTS, HOMEWORK AND SPECIAL WRITINGS

Some teachers have groups which are doing tests, homework and special writing tasks - SWTs (mainly groups of 2 hours a week).

Can you please remember to record the marks of tests and SWTs in ALTS and also record homework as done in ALTS.

There is a tab for homework next to the attendance tab. Tick the box above the date of the class if you set homework for that day, the column will turn BLUE and mark the homework done just like you mark in attendance. There is an instruction box in the bottom left hand corner of the tab for the symbols to use.

If you have any questions about what do ask John or Nuria for help.

REPORTS 1st TERM - REMINDER

HAPPY ENGLISH YL REPORTS
NOVEMBER 2016

Why write reports for young learners?
Parents want to know how their child is behaving and progressing.  It’s also a great opportunity to sort out any problems before they become ingrained.

What’s the deadline?
We need all the reports in by Friday, November 25th  so that we can check and hand them out before the Puente (December long weekend).

How to write reports for young learners:
***New teachers, arrange a date and time to come and see John or Nuria so we can do a few reports together.

1.       Open ACADEMIES ALTS, select “Happy English” and your name from the dropdown menus, click “Search” and double click the group you want to write reports for.

2.       In the top left corner you’ll see tabs for Results/CA/Reports/Attendance. Click on the Reports tab.

3.       Select the Period – in this case “Winter term 1” and click on the “Create/Edit/View report” button.

4.       In the top left corner you will see a list of your students in this group. Select the student you want to write a report for and click on their name. If you see any students who are shaded in grey, they’ve dropped out, you do NOT need to write a report for them.

5.       REPORT COMMENTS:
There are several categories, and these categories vary from level to level. You will only be permitted to select ONE comment in most of the categories, unless it states otherwise.  Select and double click the most appropriate comment.  The comments you’ve selected will appear in the lower window. You can now minimise the dropdown list of comments and move on to the next category.  You’ll see that some categories are “optional”. Please select comments from these sections only if applicable. If you find there is a category with no comments, it’s because this category applies to different term than the current one.

FAQs:
·         What if my student is a girl?   Don´t worry! All the translated Catalan comments are gender-neutral.
·         Why does it say “the language”, rather than “English”   à the reports are designed to be used for all our YLs, regardless of the language they’re learning
·         What are the Course Objectives?  àsee the text below for guidelines

6.       There are two editable categoriesRecommendations for struggling students and “Rounding Off comment You can choose one of the pre-written comments or you can write in your own personalised recommendation or comment. If you want to add a personalised comment, select “IF YOU WANT TO ADD YOUR OWN COMMENT...”. Then, double click on that comment in the lower window and you will be able to type in your comment in Catalan (no need to translate it into English!).

7.       Changing a comment – if you want to change a selected comment, click on DELETE in the lower window next to the comment. Then double-click on the correct comment in the upper window. It will now appear as the last comment in the lower window. DON’T WORRY ABOUT THE ORDER OF THE COMMENTS. Everything will be in the correct order when the reports are printed/emailed.
8.       When you’ve finished your reports in that group, click on Edit Finish to save them. It’s not necessary to click on Edit Finish between every report.

9.       For your information, the attendance is from the start of the course to the end of October.  The programme will automatically count up the attendance and enter it in the report for you! Please make sure that the attendance is entered correctly in Academies ALTS.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guidelines for Course Objectives
Levels INF, N1-N6
Enjoyment, Active participation, Interest and effort
Cooperation with teacher + classmates
Learns (most of) the vocabulary (and grammar)
(Starts to) communicate in English, using the classroom language phrases and generating phrases of his/her own, even though they may not be accurate.

Meeting the course objectives
Meeting course objectives means more than the child is learning the vocab etc.; it incorporates all the items in the above list.

NOTES:
-a child who is average for the class and a child who is doing well are both meeting course objectives.
-a child in INF level is meeting the objectives even if he doesn’t say anything (because he not ready to) but shows he knows the vocabulary by pointing at the right flashcard for e.g. (Bear in mind that speaking  the language is NOT the main objective in INF level, although many children are happy to repeat and even say phrases)

Struggling to meet course objectives
A child who doesn’t seem to be learning much or enjoying the classes, is struggling to meet course objectives. You need to see John/Nuria if you want to use this comment.

WELCOME to the HAPPY ENGLISH TEACHERS' BLOG

Welcome from John and Núria!

Our Happy English Teachers’ Blog is now up and running – Hooray!

The idea of the Blog is to help keep teachers informed with what is happening in Happy English and also to provide you with information, ideas and materials.

Instead of sending you emails with news we'll write it as a post on the blog:

When an item is posted, you'll receive an email with that piece of news. You can always look back at a news item by going to the blog and searching the contents (there's a search field on the right column).

If you have any queries or comments about any blog posts, don't reply to the email you get from the blog - you should email us or contact us by phone or Whatsapp (John - admin@happyenglish.cat / 646.957.077  or Núria - nuria.rof@happyenglish.cat / 646 95 63 27

We hope you enjoy the blog
